Background

Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a phospholipid component of cell membranes, particularly enriched in the inner leaflet. When cells undergo apoptosis (programmed cell death), PS flips to the outer leaflet of the membrane, serving as an "eat-me" signal for phagocytes (cells that engulf and destroy other cells).
