Background
purT, or Phosphoribosylglycinamide formyltransferase 2, is an alternative enzyme involved in the de novo purine biosynthetic pathway. Unlike PurN, PurT uses formate and ATP to formylglycinamide ribonucleotide from glycinamide ribonucleotide. This alternative route provides flexibility in purine synthesis, especially when 10-formyltetrahydrofolate is limiting.
