- Staphylococcus aureus clfA (Clumping Factor A) is a cell wall-anchored adhesin protein of Staphylococcus aureus. Its primary function is to mediate bacterial adhesion to host extracellular matrix proteins, particularly fibrinogen-a key component of blood clots and the extracellular matrix. By binding to fibrinogen, clfA enables Staphylococcus aureus to adhere to host tissues (e.g., damaged skin or mucous membranes) and form biofilms-structured communities that enhance bacterial resistance to antibiotics and host immune clearance. This adhesion is a critical first step in infection, supporting colonization and the development of invasive disease (e.g., endocarditis or osteomyelitis). ClfA exhibits immunogenicity, and antibodies against clfA can block fibrinogen binding and biofilm formation. This makes clfA a candidate for Staphylococcus aureus vaccines, aiming to prevent adhesion and biofilm development. It is also used in diagnostic assays to detect Staphylococcus aureus strains, particularly those associated with invasive infections.
