Background
Staphylococcus aureus clfA is identical to the above-described Clumping Factor A of Staphylococcus aureus. It is a key adhesin that binds to host fibrinogen, enabling bacterial adhesion, colonization, and biofilm formation-processes critical for the development of both localized and invasive infections. Its role in biofilm formation makes it particularly important for persistent infections, as biofilms protect bacteria from antibiotics and immune cells. ClfA's immunogenicity supports its use in vaccine development, with vaccines targeting clfA designed to inhibit adhesion and biofilm formation. It is also a diagnostic marker for Staphylococcus aureus, helping to identify strains that are more likely to cause invasive disease due to their ability to bind fibrinogen.
