MRPS31 (Mitochondrial Ribosomal Protein S31) is a vital structural component of the small 28S subunit of the mitoribosome. It is responsible for the translation of the 13 essential proteins encoded by the mitochondrial genome, all of which are core components of the Oxidative Phosphorylation (OXPHOS) system. Beyond structural scaffolding, MRPS31 acts as a sensor for mitochondrial-to-nuclear retrograde signaling, communicating the status of mitochondrial protein synthesis to the nucleus to coordinate metabolic adaptation and the Mitochondrial Unfolded Protein Response (UPRmt).
