CALB2: A Marker for Neurons and Mesothelioma

Calbindin 2 (CALB2), also known ubiquitously as Calretinin, is a 29 kDa calcium-binding protein that is part of the same calmodulin superfamily as calbindin-D28k. As a member of this family, it acts as an intracellular calcium buffer to sculpt calcium transients and protect cells from excitotoxicity. Unlike other family members, however, expression is limited to particular cell types. In the brain, it is a classic marker for a class of GABAergic interneurons in the cortex and hippocampus. In pathology, it is known to be highly and specifically expressed by malignant mesotheliomas, so it forms a key part of the immunohistochemical panel used to diagnose this cancer.

Background

Calcium ion binding activity, involved in regulation of presynaptic cytosolic calcium ion concentration. Predicted to be involved in regulation of long-term synaptic potentiation. Predicted to be involved in regulation of presynaptic cytosolic calcium ion concentration. Located in gap junction. Is active in parallel fiber to Purkinje cell synapse. Is expressed in alimentary system, nervous system, reproductive system, respiratory system and sensory organ. Orthologous to human CALB2 (calbindin 2).
