Cholesteryl Ester Transfer Protein (CETP) is the principal protein in plasma responsible for the transfer of cholesterol esters between lipoproteins. Inhibiting CETP is a major pharmaceutical target for elevating HDL (“good”) cholesterol and novel antibodies are required for studying lipid metabolism, as well as developing new treatments for atherosclerosis prevention.

CETP: The Cholesterol Ester Transfer Protein

Cholesteryl Ester Transfer Protein (CETP) is a hydrophobic glycoprotein that is produced in the liver and secreted into the circulation bound to lipoproteins. CETP facilitates the transfer of cholesteryl esters from HDL particles to apolipoprotein B-containing particles, such as low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), in exchange for triglycerides. This process has the net effect of lowering HDL-cholesterol and increasing LDL-cholesterol. Since elevated HDL and reduced LDL are strongly correlated with cardiovascular protection, the inhibition of CETP has been a longstanding therapeutic target in the development of novel drugs and reagents to raise HDL levels.

Background

CETP is found in plasma, where it is involved in the transfer of cholesteryl ester from high density lipoprotein (HDL) to other lipoproteins. Defects in this gene are a cause of hyperalphalipoproteinemia 1 (HALP1).
