CHAT: The Acetylcholine-Synthesizing Enzyme
Choline acetyltransferase (CHAT) is a soluble, cytoplasmic enzyme that is expressed exclusively in cholinergic neurons. Its only known function is the synthesis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh) by catalyzing the transfer of an acetyl group from acetyl-CoA to choline. Newly synthesized ACh is then loaded into synaptic vesicles, transported into the presynaptic terminal, and released in response to an action potential. Cholinergic neurons have a variety of roles in the nervous system, including activation of skeletal muscle at the neuromuscular junction, and involvement in memory, learning, and attention. Cholinergic neuron loss and dysfunction is one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease and cholinergic neuron loss in the spinal cord results in paralysis in motor neuron disease.

Background
Enables choline O-acetyltransferase activity and choline binding activity. Involved in several processes, including acetylcholine biosynthetic process; antral ovarian follicle growth; and response to ethanol. Located in neuron projection. Biomarker of Alzheimer's disease and asthma. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in Alzheimer's disease and congenital myasthenic syndrome 6. Orthologous to human CHAT (choline O-acetyltransferase).
