CPB1: A Basic Amino Acid-Specific Digestive Peptidase

Produced in the pancreas, CPB1 is secreted as an inactive proenzyme into the small intestine. It is activated by trypsin and in the context of digestion, CPB1 removes basic amino acid residues (lysine and arginine) from the C-terminal ends of polypeptide chains. This aids the digestion of dietary proteins, along with the similar family of carboxypeptidase A enzymes, into components small enough to be absorbed by the small intestine. It is typically found at reduced levels or decreased activity in states of pancreatic insufficiency, such as chronic pancreatitis and cystic fibrosis.

Carboxypeptidase B is a widely used metalloprotease, typically isolated from pancreas of different animals, that specifically releases arginine and lysine.
