CS: The Gatekeeper of the Krebs Cycle

Citrate synthase (CS), a citric acid cycle enzyme, is found in the mitochondrial matrix. It catalyzes the first step of the cycle, which is the condensation of acetyl-CoA and oxaloacetate to form citrate. It is the major route by which carbon atoms derived from carbohydrates (via pyruvate) and fats (via fatty acid oxidation) enter the central hub of aerobic respiration. Since CS is a stable enzyme whose levels do not fluctuate widely and is abundantly expressed in the mitochondria, the enzyme is widely used as a quantitative reference for mitochondrial content or mass in tissue and cell lysates.

Background

CS (Citrate Synthase) is a Protein Coding gene. Diseases associated with CS include Critical Illness Polyneuropathy and Cat-Scratch Disease. Among its related pathways are Respiratory electron transport, ATP synthesis by chemiosmotic coupling, and heat production by uncoupling proteins. and Pyruvate metabolism and Citric Acid (TCA) cycle. Gene Ontology (GO) annotations related to this gene include citrate (Si)-synthase activity.
