CSNK2A1: The Alpha Catalytic Subunit of the "Master Kinase" CK2

CSNK2A1 (Casein Kinase 2 Alpha 1) is the major catalytic subunit of Casein Kinase 2 (CK2). CK2 is a constitutively active, highly abundant, serine/threonine protein kinase complex and is required for cell viability. CK2 is a tetramer consisting of two catalytic subunits (alpha or alpha-prime) and two regulatory beta subunits. CK2 has one of the largest substrate specificities of any protein kinase, phosphorylating hundreds of proteins that are involved in almost every aspect of cell biology, including transcription, DNA repair, and signaling. CK2 is overexpressed in nearly all human cancers and functions to drive cell proliferation and inhibit apoptosis. Due to its central role in oncogenesis, CK2 has been referred to as a “master kinase”.
