CYP19A1: The Gateway to Estrogen Synthesis
Aromatase, also known as P450arom or estrogen synthase, is a cytochrome P450 (CYP450) enzyme, encoded by the CYP19A1 gene. It is the only enzyme responsible for the aromatization of androgens, by converting androstenedione to estrone and testosterone to estradiol. This enzyme is responsible for the last step of estrogen biosynthesis in the body. While it is essential for a wide variety of both reproductive and non-reproductive physiological functions, tissue Aromatase activity in peripheral tissues is the main source of estrogen production in postmenopausal women and one of the driving forces for the proliferation of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer.
