Cytochrome-C Fractionation

Cytochrome-C fractionation is a widely used biochemical technique employed to investigate the integrity of the mitochondrial outer membrane and, more importantly, to detect the release of cytochrome c from the mitochondrial intermembrane space into the cytosol. This translocation is a pivotal and often irreversible event in the initiation of the intrinsic (mitochondrial) pathway of apoptosis, a major form of programmed cell death.
