GOT2: A Key Mitochondrial Enzyme in the Malate-Aspartate Shuttle
Glutamic-Oxaloacetic Transaminase 2, or GOT2, is the mitochondrial form of the enzyme aspartate aminotransferase. It is involved in a variety of metabolic pathways, such as the malate-aspartate shuttle that moves reducing equivalents in the form of NADH from the cytosol into the mitochondrial matrix for oxidative phosphorylation. GOT2 is also involved in mitochondrial amino acid biosynthesis and gluconeogenesis. This mitochondrial enzyme is critical for maintaining cellular energetic homeostasis, and has also been implicated in metabolic disorders and cancer.

Background
Glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase is a pyridoxal phosphate-dependent enzyme which exists in cytoplasmic and inner-membrane mitochondrial forms, GOT1 and GOT2, respectively. GOT plays a role in amino acid metabolism and the urea and tricarboxylic acid cycles. The two enzymes are homodimeric and show close homology. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.
