LACZ, or Hypoxanthine-guanine-xanthine phosphoribosyltransferase, despite the common abbreviation for beta-galactosidase (lacZ gene), this entry describes a purine salvage enzyme. This H/G/XPRT catalyzes the transfer of phosphoribosyl groups from PRPP to hypoxanthine, guanine, or xanthine, forming IMP, or XMP, respectively. This salvages purine bases for nucleotide synthesis.
