SBDS is an essential factor for the late-stage maturation of the 60S ribosomal subunit, specifically facilitating the release of eIF6. Mutations in this protein lead to Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome, a ribosomopathy characterized by bone marrow failure and exocrine pancreatic insufficiency.
