PRDX3

Thioredoxin-dependent peroxidoreductase, mitochondria is an enzyme encoded by the PRDX3 gene in humans. It is a member of the peroxidase family of antioxidant enzymes.

This gene encodes a protein with antioxidant function and is located in the mitochondria. This gene showed significant nucleotide sequence similarity to the gene encoding the C22 subunit of the Salmonella typhimurium alkyl hydroperoxide reductase. The expression of this gene product in E. coli lacking the C22 subunit gene rescued the bacterial resistance to alkyl hydroperoxide. Human and mouse genes are highly conserved, and they map to synonymous regions between mouse and human chromosomes. Sequence comparisons with recently cloned mammalian homologues indicate that these genes are composed of families responsible for regulating cell proliferation, differentiation and antioxidant functions. It has been found that two transcript variants of this gene encode two different isoforms.
