Background

Synaptophysin (SYP) is an integral membrane glycoprotein found abundantly in the membranes of synaptic vesicles in neurons and in similar small neuroendocrine vesicles in neuroendocrine cells. It's a widely used and reliable marker for identifying cells and tumors of neuroendocrine or neuronal origin.
Protein class

Disease related genes, Human disease related genes, Potential drug targets, Transporters

Predicted location

Membrane

Single cell type specificity

Group enriched (Rod photoreceptor cells, Cone photoreceptor cells, Bipolar cells)

Immune cell specificity

Immune cell enhanced (neutrophil)

Cell line specificity

Cell line enhanced (K-562, SCLC-21H, SH-SY5Y)

Interaction

Homohexamer or homotetramer. Interacts with SRCIN1 (PubMed:18662323). Interacts with VAMP2; the interaction is inhibit by interaction of VAPM2 with SEPT8 (By similarity).
