Beyond renal physiology, it is aberrantly upregulated in multiple malignancies, functioning as a key oncogenic factor that promotes cell proliferation, invasion, and metastasis through modulating signaling pathways like PI3K/AKT. Its dual role in normal tissue homeostasis and tumorigenesis renders podocalyxin a promising biomarker and therapeutic target for kidney diseases and cancers.
