- Zika virus (ZIKV) is one of several medically important flaviviruses transmitted by mosquitos to humans. Flaviviruses are positive-sense RNA viruses of approximately 50 nm in diameter with a lipid bilayer containing the envelope (E) and premembrane/membrane (prM/M) glycoproteins. The ectodomain of E protein is composed of two non-continuous domains (EDI and EDII) and a continuous immunoglobulin-like domain (EDIII). The flavivirus E glycoprotein, essential for viral attachment and entry into host cells, is a major target of human antibodies.
