CCNA2: The Key Driver of the S/G2/M Transition

Cyclin A2 (CCNA2) is part of a family of regulatory proteins that control the progression of the eukaryotic cell cycle. CCNA2 is crucial because it binds and activates both Cyclin-Dependent Kinase 2 (CDK2) and Cyclin-Dependent Kinase 1 (CDK1) at different stages of the cell cycle. The Cyclin A2-CDK2 complex promotes entry into S-phase (DNA synthesis) and early G2. The Cyclin A2-CDK1 complex then promotes entry into mitosis (M-phase). As the expression of CCNA2 is tightly restricted to the S, G2, and M phases, it is an accurate biomarker of actively proliferating cells. High CCNA2 expression is also often associated with a poor prognosis in various cancers.

CCNA2 (Cyclin A2) is a Protein Coding gene. Splenic Diffuse Red Pulp Small B-Cell Lymphoma and Valproate Embryopathy are the diseases that are associated with CCNA2. Some of the pathways that this gene overlaps are CDK-mediated phosphorylation and removal of Cdc6 and Signaling events mediated by PRL. The gene ontology (GO) annotations that overlap with this gene include protein kinase binding. A significant paralog of this gene is CCNA1.
