Background
The class 1 outer membrane porin protein, PorA, is expressed by almost all meningococcal strains, and antigenic variation among PorA proteins is the basis of serosubtyping. PorA can induce bactericidal anti- bodies in humans and mice when they are immunized with meningococcal outer membrane vesicles (OMVs), and monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) against PorA can be protective in an infant rat model. Thus, the PorA protein is considered to be an important vaccine antigen and is therefore the main component in a Dutch candidate vaccine.
