Background
NOTUM encodes a secreted Wnt antagonist that regulates WNT/Wg activity gradients in Drosophila imaginal discs and in vertebrate embryogenesis [7-9]. While originally proposed to cleave glycosylphosphatidylinositol linkages, more recently NOTUM has been shown to be a carboxyl oxoesterase that functions as a Wnt antagonist by deacylating Wnts.
