Background
Envelope glycoprotein gp160 is a precursor protein encoded by HIV-1. It is cleaved into gp120 (surface glycoprotein) and gp41 (transmembrane glycoprotein). gp120 mediates binding to host CD4 receptors and coreceptors, while gp41 facilitates fusion of the viral and host cell membranes, allowing viral entry. It is a major target for vaccine development.
