- Function
- RSV refers to Respiratory Syncytial Virus, and several of its proteins have crucial functions during infection. The Fusion (F) protein is a key player, mediating the fusion of the viral envelope with the host cell membrane, allowing the virus to enter the cell. It also promotes the formation of syncytia, large multinucleated cells formed by the fusion of infected cells with neighboring cells, contributing to disease pathology.
Another important protein is the Attachment (G) protein, which is involved in the initial attachment of the virus to the host cell surface receptors. While the specific receptor is debated, G protein plays a role in targeting the virus to airway epithelial cells. Both F and G proteins are major targets for neutralizing antibodies and are therefore important for vaccine development.
