- The GD3 synthase gene (ST8SIA1) encodes an enzyme that catalyzes the synthesis of the ganglioside GD3. GD3 is a type of sialic acid-containing glycosphingolipid found on the outer layer of cell membranes, particularly enriched in neural tissues and certain tumor cells like melanoma and neuroblastoma.
Functionally, GD3 is involved in various cellular processes, including cell growth, proliferation, differentiation, adhesion, and migration. It can influence cell signaling pathways and has been implicated in apoptosis. In the nervous system, GD3 plays a role in neural development and stem cell self-renewal. Aberrant expression of GD3 is often associated with tumor progression and metastasis, making it a potential therapeutic target in some cancers. Additionally, GD3 has been linked to inflammatory responses and neurodegenerative disorders.
