Background

The enzyme horseradish peroxidase (HRP), found in the roots of horseradish, is used extensively in biochemistry applications primarily for its ability to amplify a weak signal and increase detectability of a target molecule. It is a metalloenzyme with many isoforms, of which the most studied type is C.
C5 is a key component of the complement system, a crucial part of the innate immune response. Upon activation, C5 is cleaved into C5a and C5b. C5a is a potent anaphylatoxin that attracts and activates immune cells, contributing to inflammation. C5b initiates the formation of the membrane attack complex (MAC), which lyses target cells. Dysregulation of C5 activity is implicated in various inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Therapeutic antibodies targeting C5 have been developed to block its activation and alleviate disease symptoms. Continued research aims to understand the precise mechanisms of C5 activation and its role in different pathological conditions.
