NUP50 (also known as NPAP60) is a mobile, soluble nucleoporin localized to the nuclear basket of the Nuclear Pore Complex (NPC). It functions as a specialized "docking station" and accelerator for the nuclear import/export machinery. Specifically, NUP50 facilitates the displacement of import substrates from Importin-alpha, thereby promoting the recycling of transport receptors and maintaining the directional flux of the Ran-GTPase signaling gradient. By regulating the speed of nuclear entry for transcription factors, NUP50 acts as a kinetic tuner for cellular responses to growth factors and stress.
