CAMK1: A Downstream Effector of Calcium Signaling
Calcium/Calmodulin Dependent Protein Kinase 1 (CAMK1), also known as CAMK I, is a serine/threonine kinase and member of the CaMK family of proteins. CAMK1 is activated through phosphorylation on its T-loop by upstream kinases CAMKK1 and CAMKK2 in response to elevated cytoplasmic calcium levels. CAMK1 phosphorylates a number of downstream targets, including transcription factors to regulate gene expression. It has been implicated in a number of cell signaling pathways, including T-cell activation, neuronal differentiation, and hormone signaling.
