COL3A1: The Collagen of Distensible Tissues

Collagen Type III Alpha 1 (COL3A1) is a fibrillar collagen that is abundant in hollow organs and distensible tissues. It is found co-localized with the fibril-forming collagen Type I, but it forms thinner, more elastic reticular fibers to provide structural support to tissues such as the uterus, lungs, and intestines, and above all, the wall of the arteries. Mutations in the COL3A1 gene result in the life-threatening vascular form of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (vEDS) characterized by increased risk of catastrophic arterial or organ rupture. As with COL1A1, this collagen is also overproduced during the fibrotic response.
