MME: A Crucial biomarker in Cancer and Alzheimer's disease
Membrane metallo-endopeptidase (MME), popularly known as neutral endopeptidase (NEP) or CD10, is a type - II integral membrane protein distributed throughout various body tissues, including the kidneys, lungs, and nervous system. Functioning as a zinc - dependent endopeptidase, it cleaves peptide hormones and neurotransmitters to maintain biochemical balance. MME is involved in multiple diseases: it helps regulate blood pressure, with malfunction contributing to hypertension; participates in amyloid-β peptide metabolism, affecting Alzheimer's disease progression; and serves as a biomarker in some cancers, influencing tumor cell proliferation and metastasis. As such, MME is a significant target for developing new therapies.

Background
The protein encoded by this gene is a type II transmembrane glycoprotein and a common acute lymphocytic leukemia antigen that is an important cell surface marker in the diagnosis of human acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). The encoded protein is present on leukemic cells of pre-B phenotype, which represent 85% of cases of ALL. This protein is not restricted to leukemic cells, however, and is found on a variety of normal tissues. The protein is a neutral endopeptidase that cleaves peptides at the amino side of hydrophobic residues and inactivates several peptide hormones including glucagon, enkephalins, substance P, neurotensin, oxytocin, and bradykinin.
