- The RSV F gene encodes the fusion (F) protein of the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). This protein is a crucial transmembrane glycoprotein located on the viral envelope and plays a vital role in the virus's ability to infect host cells.
The primary function of the RSV F protein is to mediate the fusion of the viral membrane with the host cell membrane. This fusion process allows the virus to enter the host cell cytoplasm and initiate infection. The F protein undergoes proteolytic cleavage to become active and can also promote the fusion of infected cells with neighboring uninfected cells, leading to the formation of syncytia, a hallmark of RSV infection.
