  • The TLR2 gene encodes Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2), a key pattern recognition receptor of the innate immune system. Located on the cell surface, TLR2 detects a diverse range of pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) from bacteria, fungi, viruses, and parasites. These PAMPs include lipoproteins, lipoteichoic acid, and zymosan.
    TLR2 typically functions as a heterodimer with either TLR1 or TLR6 to recognize specific ligands. Upon ligand binding, TLR2 initiates intracellular signaling cascades through adaptor proteins like MyD88, leading to the activation of transcription factors such as NF-κB. This activation results in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and other immune mediators, playing a crucial role in host defense against infection.
