Background

CXCR4 is a chemokine receptor that belongs to the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily. It is widely expressed on various cell types, including hematopoietic stem cells, lymphocytes, and cancer cells. The ligand for CXCR4 is CXCL12, also known as stromal cell-derived factor 1 (SDF-1). The interaction between CXCR4 and CXCL12 plays critical roles in cell migration, chemotaxis, and homing, as well as in embryonic development, angiogenesis, and immune responses. In the context of cancer, CXCR4 is frequently overexpressed and contributes to tumor cell proliferation, metastasis, and survival. Furthermore, CXCR4 is a co-receptor for HIV-1, playing a vital role in viral entry into target cells. The importance of CXCR4 in various physiological and pathological processes has made it an attractive target for therapeutic intervention.
