- Function
- CD74, also known as the invariant chain, is a transmembrane protein that plays a key role in antigen presentation by MHC class II molecules. Within antigen-presenting cells (APCs), CD74 binds to MHC class II molecules in the endoplasmic reticulum, preventing the premature binding of endogenous peptides. It then guides MHC class II molecules to endosomal compartments, where it is cleaved, allowing for the loading of antigenic peptides. CD74 also functions as a receptor for macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), influencing cell signaling and inflammation.
