- Function
- The IL1B gene encodes interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), a potent pro-inflammatory cytokine crucial for the body's immune response. Produced mainly by activated macrophages, IL-1β plays a key role in initiating and amplifying inflammation. It induces fever, stimulates the production of acute-phase proteins, and promotes the activation and recruitment of immune cells like neutrophils and lymphocytes.
Furthermore, IL-1β influences the proliferation and differentiation of various cells and can contribute to tissue remodeling by inducing the production of enzymes and prostaglandins. While essential for host defense against pathogens and injury, dysregulation of IL-1β is implicated in numerous inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The mature form of IL-1β is processed and secreted via a specific pathway involving caspase-1 and gasdermin-D.
