CCL2: The Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-1 (MCP-1)

C-C Motif Chemokine Ligand 2 (CCL2), also best known as Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-1 (MCP-1), is a strong chemoattractant for monocytes, memory T-cells and dendritic cells. It is produced and released by a wide range of cell types in response to inflammatory signals. The primary role of CCL2 is to form a chemotactic gradient that will lead the cells to migrate from the blood vessels to the inflammatory site. CCL2 is able to do this by binding to and signaling through its receptor CCR2. This process is a critical underlying cause of many chronic inflammatory diseases such as atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetic nephropathy. Tumor-derived CCL2 is able to recruit tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) that support tumor growth, angiogenesis and metastasis.

Background

Chemotactic factor that attracts monocytes and basophils but not neutrophils or eosinophils. Augments monocyte anti-tumor activity. Has been implicated in the pathogenesis of diseases characterized by monocytic infiltrates, like psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis or atherosclerosis. May be involved in the recruitment of monocytes into the arterial wall during the disease process of atherosclerosis.
