ENPEP encodes the enzyme glutamyl aminopeptidase, which is involved in the processing of peptides. The enzyme plays a significant role in controlling the levels of peptide hormones by hydrolyzing the glutamate residues from the N-terminus of peptides. ENPEP is a part of the zinc-dependent metallopeptidase family and is expressed predominantly in the kidneys, where it regulates blood pressure through the renin-angiotensin system. The enzyme helps control the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, which regulates vasoconstriction and salt balance. Variants of ENPEP have been studied for their potential role in hypertension and other cardiovascular diseases.
