ESAM is a gene that encodes a cell adhesion molecule that is specifically expressed in endothelial cells. It is involved in the regulation of cell-cell adhesion and the stabilization of endothelial junctions. ESAM is important in maintaining the integrity of the blood-brain barrier and the blood-retinal barrier. It contributes to the regulation of vascular permeability and leukocyte transmigration, which are crucial for inflammation and immune response. ESAM is also involved in angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, and its dysregulation can contribute to various diseases, including cancer and cardiovascular disorders.
