The ATP binding cassette (ABC) transporter IrtAB finally imports iron-bound cMBT across the inner membrane, and its deletion attenuates M. tuberculosis replication in mice. ABC transporters constitute a large family of membrane transporters, which couple the binding and hydrolysis of ATP at a pair of highly conserved nucleotide binding domains (NBDs) to conformational changes of variable transmembrane domains (TMDs).
