Background
nagA, or N-acetylglucosamine-6-phosphate deacetylase, is an enzyme involved in the catabolism of N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc), a major component of peptidoglycan and chitin. It catalyzes the deacetylation of N-acetylglucosamine-6-phosphate to glucosamine-6-phosphate. NagA is important for utilizing GlcNAc as a carbon and nitrogen source.
