This gene codes for polygalacturonase (PG) which is the major enzyme involved in pectin metabolism during fruit ripening. First genetically modified tomato, called the FLAVR SAVR tomato, was developed through the use of antisense RNA to regulate the expression of PG in ripening tomato.
