Rabies virus (RABV) belongs to phylogroup I of the Lyssavirus genus within the Rhabdoviridae family of the Mononegavirales order. It is a zoonotic virus found almost ubiquitously worldwide in different animal reservoirs, including domestic and wild canids and bats. Despite significant efforts, most countries face severe difficulties with RABV control, and in fact the virus has been eliminated only from a few developed countries by mass vaccination of wild and domestic canines.
