Background

Gentamicin 3-N-acetyltransferase is a bacterial enzyme that confers resistance to gentamicin and other aminoglycoside antibiotics. It catalyzes the transfer of an acetyl group from acetyl-CoA to the 3-amino group of gentamicin, inactivating the antibiotic. This modification prevents gentamicin from binding to the bacterial ribosome and inhibiting protein synthesis, thus allowing resistant bacteria to thrive.
