Arginine deiminase is an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of L-arginine to L-citrulline and ammonia. This enzyme is part of the arginine dihydrolase pathway, an important energy-generating pathway in anaerobic bacteria. It is also of interest in cancer therapy, as some cancer cells are arginine auxotrophs, and arginine deiminase can deplete circulating arginine, leading to tumor cell death.
