lpxC, or UDP-3-O-[3-hydroxymyristoyl] N-acetylglucosamine deacetylase, is an essential enzyme in lipid A biosynthesis in Gram-negative bacteria. It catalyzes the deacetylation of UDP-3-O-(R-3-hydroxymyristoyl)-N-acetylglucosamine, an irreversible step in the pathway. LpxC is considered a promising target for novel antibacterial drugs due to its essentiality.
