pgl, or 6-phosphogluconolactonase, is an enzyme in the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP). It catalyzes the hydrolysis of 6-phosphogluconolactone to 6-phosphogluconate. This is an early step in the PPP, which generates NADPH (for reductive biosynthesis and antioxidant defense) and precursors for nucleotide synthesis.
