Background
GPIa/IIa (also known as α2β1, VLA2, CD49b/CD29), like GPIIb/IIIa, is a heterodimeric molecule that is expressed on the platelet membrane. α2β1 directly mediates the first contact of platelets to collagen and is a major receptor for collagen exposed from the subendothelial basement membrane.
