CA6: The Secreted Salivary Carbonic Anhydrase

CA6 is one of 15 known alpha-carbonic anhydrases. Unlike the other 14 carbonic anhydrases that are cytosolic, mitochondrial or bound to the endoplasmic reticulum, CA6 is a secreted protein. It is expressed in acinar cells of the salivary glands and secreted into saliva in large quantities. In the mouth, the protein is believed to play a number of roles, from maintaining the acidity of dental plaque (protecting against caries) to contributing to the sensation of carbonated ("fizzy") tastes. As a secreted protein, its presence in saliva makes it a good candidate for a non-invasive biomarker for disorders of the salivary glands (such as Sjögren's syndrome) and other systemic diseases.

Background

The protein encoded by this gene is one of several isozymes of carbonic anhydrase. This protein is found only in salivary glands and saliva and protein may play a role in the reversible hydratation of carbon dioxide though its function in saliva is unknown.
