Background
Histone H4 is a core component of the nucleosome, the smallest subunit of chromatin. This fundamental unit consists of 147 base pairs of DNA wrapped around an octamer of core histone proteins-specifically, two copies each of Histone H2A, Histone H2B, Histone H3, and Histone H4. Histone H1, a linker histone, is found where DNA enters and exits the nucleosome core; it's responsible for establishing higher-order chromatin structure.
